Our guaranteed seasoned Hardwood firewood comes from local managed woodlands and have a maximum moisture content of 24%. They have then been air-dried and only when we have tested each load by measuring the moisture content, do we class the firewood as fully seasoned.
Hardwoods have a higher energy content and release more heat per firebox load. They also produce long-lasting fires and coal beds.
Hardwood is denser than softwood so has a higher heat content or calorific value. Typically, the heat content of softwood is little more than half as much as hardwood by volume.
- Typical heat content of hardwood 2300kWh/m³ (stacked)
- Typical heat content of softwood 1,300kWh/m³ (stacked)
Broadly speaking, around twice as many softwood firewood as hardwood firewood may be required to achieve the same heat output so more frequent refueling will be necessary when burning softwood.
